Resting place of the legendary admiral in Beşiktaş
In the Beşiktaş district, close to the ferry pier, lies the tomb of Hayreddin Barbarossa – one of the best-known seafarers in Ottoman history. As grand admiral under Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent, he made the Ottoman fleet the leading naval power in the Mediterranean in the 16th century. The octagonal tomb was built by Mimar Sinan in 1541, a few years before the admiral’s death in 1546. The simple domed building stands in a small cemetery with historic gravestones. For a long time, Ottoman sailors paid their respects here before setting sail. Right next to it, a large monument from 1944 commemorates the admiral, and the nearby Naval Museum is dedicated to maritime history. The site combines well with a visit to Dolmabahçe Palace or a ferry ride from Beşiktaş.
