Where Europe and Asia Shake Hands
The Bosphorus is no ordinary waterway. It is the artery that keeps Istanbul alive, the line that separates and connects continents, the stage on which the city's history has been performed across three millennia. This 31-kilometer-long strait, between 700 meters and 3.7 kilometers wide, links the Black Sea in the north with the Sea of Marmara in the south — and by extension connects the world of the Black Sea basin with the Mediterranean. Istanbul is the only metropolis on Earth that sits on two continents simultaneously, and the Bosphorus is the reason. A journey on the Bosphorus is a journey through time. On both shores, historical monuments pass in slow procession: the white marble of the Çırağan Palace, once a sultan's residence and today gleaming as a luxury hotel; the massive walls of Rumeli Hisarı, built by Mehmed II in only three months in 1452 to cut Constantinople off from sea supply; the elegant wooden yalı — those summer residences of Ottoman pashas lining the shore like dreams out of time. On the southern bank, on the Asian side, the stately Kuleli Military High School is mirrored in the water. The Bosphorus has been a fulcrum of world history since antiquity. Xerxes built a bridge of boats across it to lead his army into Europe. Jason and the Argonauts sailed through this strait in search of the Golden Fleece. Byzantium and later Constantinople controlled the Bosphorus and grew fabulously wealthy as a result — every ship passing between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean owed them a toll. Even today, thousands of ships use the Bosphorus each year, making it one of the busiest waterways on Earth. For the visitor, several options exist for experiencing the Bosphorus. The cheapest and most authentic is the public ferry — a vessel that crosses between the European and Asian shores in a short but beautiful journey. Those with more time can take the regular Bosphorus cruise that departs from Eminönü and travels the full length of the strait to the Black Sea and back — a half-day adventure for very little money. Private boat tours aboard small yachts offer more flexibility: stops at swimming spots, fish restaurants and landmarks along the way. The finest light comes in the early evening, when the sun descends over the European shore and turns the water copper and rose. At that hour, fish restaurants on the Asian side in Üsküdar and Kadıköy fill up, and the smell of grilled sea bass and fresh bread drifts across the water. The two suspension bridges — the Bosphorus Bridge of 1973 and the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge of 1988 — light up at night in colored illumination and crown the panorama. The Bosphorus is also a natural phenomenon: two currents flow one above the other, a surface current from the Black Sea toward the Mediterranean and beneath it a denser, saltier counter-current. This double-current once gave rise to the myth that the Bosphorus had two souls. Fishermen know this secret and cast their nets at different depths depending on what they seek. The Bosphorus is therefore not merely a geographical line — it is the living heart of Istanbul.
