The New Mosque, Yeni Cami in Turkish, is one of the best-known landmarks on the shore of the Golden Horn. Construction began at the end of the 16th century and was only completed decades later. With its many domes and two slender minarets, it still shapes the silhouette of Eminönü today. Together with the Spice Bazaar and the ferry piers, the mosque forms one of the liveliest centres of the city. Inside, visitors are impressed by artistic tiles, Arabic calligraphy and a light-filled prayer hall. Thanks to its location right on the water, visitors experience here the special connection between religion, trade and everyday life that has characterised Istanbul for centuries.
