The last great palace of the Ottoman Empire
Yıldız Palace was the main residence of Sultan Abdülhamid II and became the political centre of the Ottoman Empire in the late 19th century. Unlike earlier palace complexes, Yıldız consists of several pavilions, administrative buildings and extensive gardens. The complex lies on a hill above the Bosphorus and offers a calm, green setting in the middle of the city. Visitors discover splendid reception rooms, historic pavilions and well-kept parkland. The palace offers a fascinating insight into the last decades of the Ottoman Empire and its efforts at modernisation. Thanks to its location and atmosphere it is one of Istanbul’s most underrated sights.
