Rumeli Fortress
The fortress that cut off Constantinople
Rumeli Hisarı is one of the most impressive military structures built by the Ottomans. The fortress was erected in 1452 on the orders of Sultan Mehmed II in just a few months, in order to control the Bosphorus and cut Constantinople off from supplies from the Black Sea ahead of the planned conquest. Together with Anadolu Hisarı on the opposite shore, it formed a strategic bottleneck through which no ship could pass unnoticed. The mighty walls, towers and bastions climb the slope above the Bosphorus and offer spectacular views of the strait. Today the complex serves as an open-air museum and event venue. Visitors can experience the history of Ottoman expansion first-hand while enjoying one of the most beautiful Bosphorus panoramas. The fortress is especially charming in the evening, when the sun sets over the water.
