The Spice Bazaar, also known as the Egyptian Bazaar, is one of Istanbul’s liveliest markets. It was built in the 17th century as part of the New Mosque complex and quickly became an important trading centre for goods from Asia, Arabia and the Mediterranean. As soon as they enter, visitors are greeted by the scent of saffron, cinnamon, cardamom, tea and freshly roasted coffee. The historic vaults house numerous traders selling spices, dried fruit, nuts, Turkish delight and traditional specialities. Compared with the much larger Grand Bazaar, the Spice Bazaar feels more compact and easier to navigate. Many locals still buy ingredients for Turkish cuisine here today. The colourful displays are especially striking and make the market a paradise for photographers. A visit combines perfectly with a walk along the Golden Horn or a Bosphorus cruise. The Spice Bazaar is not just a place to shop but a sensory experience that keeps Istanbul’s trading history alive.
