Sinan’s mosque for the grand admiral of the Ottoman fleet
The Kılıç Ali Pasha Mosque in Tophane was built between 1578 and 1580 by the famous court architect Mimar Sinan. It was commissioned by Kılıç Ali Pasha, grand admiral of the Ottoman fleet, who after a life at sea founded his complex near the shore of the Bosphorus. Here Sinan created a building that recalls Hagia Sophia on a smaller scale: a central dome rests on semi-domes, creating a wide, bright interior. Iznik tiles adorn the prayer niche. The complex includes a courtyard with a fountain, a madrasa, the founder’s tomb and a historic hammam that is back in use after extensive restoration. The mosque lies in the lively Tophane district, just a few steps from the Tophane Fountain and the cafés of Karaköy. As an active mosque, it is open to visitors outside prayer times.
