The Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, regarded as the spiritual centre of Orthodox Christianity, is still located here today. The narrow lanes, colourful houses and historic churches give the neighbourhood a unique character. The imposing Phanar Greek Orthodox College is particularly well known, its red-brick building towering over the quarter like a castle. Walking through Fener, visitors encounter a fascinating mix of Byzantine, Ottoman and modern Istanbul. Despite its growing popularity, the neighbourhood has preserved much of its original atmosphere.
