Summer residence of the Ottoman sultans
Beylerbeyi Palace was built between 1861 and 1865 as a summer residence for the Ottoman rulers. Located right on the Asian shore of the Bosphorus, it combines Ottoman elegance with European influences. The splendid reception rooms, crystal chandeliers, carpets and elaborate woodwork give an impression of the luxurious life of the late Ottomans. Several foreign state guests, including Empress Eugénie of France, were received here. The gardens overlooking the Bosphorus are among the most beautiful historic parks in the city. Compared with Dolmabahçe, Beylerbeyi is quieter and less crowded, yet offers an equally fascinating insight into 19th-century palace culture.
