A Roman water channel in the middle of city traffic
The Valens Aqueduct, Bozdoğan Kemeri in Turkish, is one of the oldest surviving structures in Istanbul. It was completed under the Roman emperor Valens and put into service in 368 AD as part of an extensive network that carried water from the forests of Thrace to the growing capital of Constantinople. The aqueduct spans the valley between the third and fourth hills of the Old City. Around 900 metres of it survive today, and at its highest point the double tiers of arches rise about 29 metres. The Byzantines and later the Ottomans repaired the structure many times and used it well into the 19th century. The contrast with the present is striking: the traffic of Atatürk Boulevard now flows beneath the mighty stone arches. Saraçhane Park and the Fatih district surround the aqueduct – a good starting point for walks to the Fatih or Şehzade Mosque.
