The Eyüp Sultan Mosque is one of the country’s most important religious centres. It was built at the tomb of Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, a companion of the Prophet Muhammad who died during the first Arab siege of Constantinople. Since the Ottoman conquest the site has become an important place of pilgrimage. Many sultans were symbolically girded here with the sword of Osman Gazi. Today the mosque combines spiritual significance with a calm atmosphere on the shore of the Golden Horn. Visitors experience an authentic religious setting with prayer halls, cemeteries and traditional tea gardens. A popular combination is the nearby Pierre Loti Hill, which offers an impressive view over the Golden Horn.
