Little Hagia Sophia is one of the oldest surviving religious buildings in Istanbul. It was built in the 6th century under Emperor Justinian and originally served as the Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus. Many historians regard it as the architectural forerunner of the later Hagia Sophia. The central dome, the elegant layout and the harmonious proportions already show the ideas that were perfected a few years later in the great Hagia Sophia. After the Ottoman conquest the building was converted into a mosque. Today it impresses visitors with its calm atmosphere, its finely crafted columns and its proximity to the Sea of Marmara. Away from the main tourist crowds, Little Hagia Sophia offers an authentic insight into early Byzantine architecture and Istanbul’s development over many centuries.
